KOO KYUNG SOOK

Koo Kyung Sook was born in Seoul, South Korea, and currently lives and works in Sacramento, California. After graduating from Hong Ik University, Seoul (BFA 1983), and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 1985), Koo attended Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan (MFA 1987).

Koo was a Professor of Art in the College of Fine Arts at Chungnam National University, Daejeon, South Korea from 1989 to 2010. In 1999 and 2006 she was awarded residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, Nebraska. She was also awarded a Freeman Fellowship by the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, in 2002. Since moving to California in 2010 Koo has been working full time as an artist. She received a James Irvine Fellowship at the Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, California in 2012, and was a Visiting Artist at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art, China in 2018.

Koo has exhibited her work in solo and group shows internationally, and her work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums throughout the United States and South Korea including: Baltimore Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Crocker Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Snite Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery, and Seoul Museum of Art, South Korea
